he calls the california dream. voters have approved proposition 30 his education tax initiative. you can see on the screen. 54% to 46%. and that is with -- actually that is all of the precincts reporting out. tara moriarty is in san francisco with what the vote means for california's public schools. >> reporter: we are standing in front of mission high school. and it is one of the oldest in fact the oldest high school in san francisco and it's struggling but the students here may now benefit from prop 30 passage. san francisco voters overwhelmingly supported the measure as did folks in alameda and santa cruz. they all raise the states sales tax by a quarter of a cent for four years and increase income taxes for people that make $250,000 a year by up to three percentage points. it's projected to raise $6 billion a year for schools. >> when i ran for governor, i did say i said three things. one, i want to level with you tell you the truth no more smoke and mirrors on the budget. two, we're not going to have any taxes unless the people themselves vote for it. and three we're going to mo

's election day. and the polls here in california just opened about 55 second ago. the months of campaigning the millions of dollars spent on ads comes down to this day. the presidential race remains a dead heat with the latest poll showing president obama and mitt romney still neck in neck in the all important battleground states. mitt romney voted this morning near his boston area home with his wife. romney is now heading to ohio and then pennsylvania where he is making last-minute campaign appearances. this was just announced yesterday before heading back to boston this evening. president obama is back home in chicago where he will watch the results come in later this evening. coming up at 7:15, we will have a guide to the key returns today and when we could know the results of the presidential election. >> time 7:01 you heard tori the polls opened moments ago here in california. we have reporters all over the bay area covering today's local, state and national issues. you see the reporters there tara and everybody else we will start with ktvu's at polling place in san jose good morning.

the death penalty in california. kron4's dan kerman is here in dan how are california leading? >> at this point the poll finds a majority of californians are in favor of repealing the death penalty and replacing it with life in prison without the possibility of parole. and while this is a reverse from poll numbers back in september the number of those expected to vote yes is a big enough for proportion 34 to pass. let's take a look at the numbers. the latest field poll of serving people at the end of october indicates 45 percent will vote yes, 30 percent felt no and 70 percent remained undecided. that is a significant change from early september when yes voters trilled spells opposed by 45 to the amount of 42%. >> usually when they learn more which is unique id is moving the other way. they are learning more about the initiative. and they could at most likely vote yes. >> 45 could not be enough. however, it will perhaps come down to the 70% of undecided. >> you talk about this measure is growing to have any indication about why the polls indicate that? >> it seems to be becaus
